CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS HELPING CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS

What is HELP_AB?

HELP_AB is a patient driven support, education and advocacy group that offers a unique program for patients with chronic pain.  As pain patients ourselves, we get it! We have spent years studying the challenges for patients and for the doctors that treat them.

What does HELP_AB do?

Support: We offer patients and their families support online, over the phone and in person at community support groups.  We also do community information meetings throughout Alberta. Support for patients is critical as most patients feel alone, overwhelmed and misunderstood.  Knowing that there are people who understand and who care can completely change the outlook of a pain patient.

Education: We teach patients how to communicate with their health care providers.  We know from experience that an educated patient has a much better chance of navigating the health care system.  Some of the other things we teach are self regulation, responsible medication practices, wellness, alternative therapies, coping mechanisms and much more. Most importantly, we teach patients how to be proactive in their care and to advocate for themselves.

Advocacy: HELP_AB is the largest advocacy group of its kind in Alberta.  We fight for patient rights and we represent concerns that patients have with health authorities.

"Pain is real, but so is hope."

BREAKING THE SILENCE

Many patients in the Edmonton and surrounding area are currently facing a crisis with their chronic pain management.  To help those with questions, anyone who can not find pain management or have had their's negatively impacted, we would like to invite you to our next BREAKING THE SILENCE meeting.

This meeting will give chronic pain patients an opportunity to discuss the issues they are facing, get information, and share their concerns.  The meeting is free to attend, and is open to anyone who suffers from chronic pain, their friends, family or support.  We need your help to ensure that we break the silence and remove the barriers that are effecting our pain management.

MEMBER TESTIMONIALS

We love to hear from the people who's lives we touch

Since coming to support meetings I have been so happy to finally find support and a place I can share my life in pain. My family have said they don't want to listen to my complaining any more. I was very very sad and didn't know what to do. My doctors office gave me your card to phone. I'm so thankful I did. I feel like I'm not alone anymore. I have this group who understands me and now I can sleep at night and not cry myself to sleep.
